Short Information : The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the official notification for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2026 to recruit 474 posts across Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication disciplines. Interested and eligible candidates with Engineering Degree/Diploma, M.Sc can apply online at upsconline.nic.in from 26 September 2025 to 16 October 2025.

Age Limit (as on 01-01-2026)

  • Minimum Age: 21 Years
  • Maximum Age: 30 Years
  • Age Relaxation: Applicable for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwBD (10 years) as per UPSC norms.

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold:

  • A Degree in Engineering from a recognized University/Institution, OR
  • Passed Sections A & B of Institution of Engineers (India), OR
  • Equivalent qualifications such as Graduate Membership of IETE, AMIE, or approved foreign engineering degrees recognized by the Government.

  • Civil Engineering – Category I
  • Mechanical Engineering – Category II
  • Electrical Engineering – Category III
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering – Category IV

(Each category covers multiple Central Government Services such as Central Engineering Services, Border Roads Engineering Service, Indian Railway Management Service, Indian Skill Development Service, Indian Naval Material Management Service, Defence Aeronautical Quality Assurance Service, and more).


UPSC ESE Salary & Pay Scale

  • Entry Level (Junior Engineer): ₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500 (7th CPC Pay Matrix Level-10)
  • Senior Scale: ₹67,700 – ₹2,08,700 (Level-11/12)
  • Chief Engineer / Director Level: ₹1,18,500 – ₹2,14,100 (Level-13/13A)
  • Top Administrative Posts: ₹1,44,200 – ₹2,18,200 (Level-14 and above)

Salary includes allowances like DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, Medical Benefits, Pension etc.

1.    Preliminary Exam (Objective – 500 Marks)

2.    Main Exam (Descriptive – 600 Marks)

3.    Personality Test/Interview (200 Marks)
